ECE account creation is provided automatically for most users based on their relationship with the department. (All accounts currently have fees associated with them.)

ECE undergraduates ECE undergrad students are automatically provided ECE accounts on Windows/ Unix/ Linux machines. (Fees are paid by the ECE Department.)
Non-ECE undergraduate and graduate students Non-ECE undergrad and graduate students who are taking ECE courses are automatically provided “course” accounts on ECE Windows/ Unix/ Linux machines. These accounts expire automatically at the end of each spring semester. (Fees are paid by the ECE Department.)
ECE Master’s Students Master’s Students in ECE automatically receive accounts on ECE Windows/ Unix/ Linux machines. (Fees are paid by the ECE Department.)
Ph.D. students Ph.D. students are automatically given accounts in ECE on ECE Unix/ Linux machines. They may also have accounts on other machines provided by their advisor or their research group. (Fees are paid by the advisor.)
ECE faculty and staff ECE faculty and staff are automatically given accounts on ECE Windows/ Unix/ Linux machines. (Fees are paid by the ECE Department.)
Other persons at CMU Other persons at CMU who conduct business with ECE may request an ECE account. An example of such a situation would be someone in another department who uses the ECE web server to host their web site. In order to maintain their web site, they would need an ECE Unix/ Linux account. (Fees for this account would be paid by the department in which the person is employed.)
Certain researchers or business associates ECE accounts for certain outside researchers, or business associates, may be provided. Such accounts may be restricted to avoid violations of software licensing agreements. For example, someone in the computer chip business cannot have an ECE account in order to use Cadence. These accounts require that the person obtain a sponsored account through CMU’s Andrew Computing organization. After doing so, an ECE account will be created that is funded by an ECE sponsor.
