The following is a guide to help you understand how to navigate to a file or directory in AFS.
You can access your AFS space by using a SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol) client to connect to a remote cluster. Your machine should have SSH installed if you are working from a PC, or Fetch if you are working from a Mac.
The path name that you will see at the top right of your SSH window on your PC is pointing to your Home Directory. You can also see this path in Fetch on your Mac by clicking on “Path” at the top left of the Fetch window. Once you are connected to your AFS space, either on a Mac or PC, you will see a list of folders and directories. Everyone should have a Private and a Public folder by default. The Private directory should be used to store files that you don’t want others to see, and the Public directory should be used to share files. In both cases, the path will be as follows: /afs/ece.cmu.edu/usr/(your userid)
Here are several of the hostnames you can use to connect to your AFS space in ECE:
ece006.ece.local.cmu.edu
ece007.ece.local.cmu.edu
ece008.ece.local.cmu.edu
To access your AFS space from a PC, do the following:
Open SSH Secure File Transfer Client.
Hit the spacebar or click on the Quick Connect button near the top left of the window.
Type one of the hostnames above into the hostname field in the Connect to Remote Host window that appears.
Type your userid in the User Name field.
Click on the Connect button.
To download items from AFS to your PC, right click on the item in the right pane, then select “download” from the drop-down menu, or simply click and drag the item to your desktop or to the desired folder.
To upload files or folders to your AFS space, click and drag the file or folder to the right pane of the SSH window.
To access your AFS space from a Mac, do the following:
Open Fetch.
Type one of the hostnames above into the hostname field.
Enter your username.
Connect using: SFTP
Enter your password.
Click on Connect button.
To download items from AFS to your Mac, click on “Get” located at the top of the window in Fetch. Click on “Put” to upload files or folders to your AFS space.
Once you are connected to your AFS space, either on a Mac or PC, you will see a list of folders and directories. Everyone should have a Private and a Public folder by default. The Private directory should be used to store files that you don’t want others to see, and the Public directory should be used to share files.
