AFS

AFS is a distributed network filesystem with a global namespace in common use at Carnegie Mellon University as well as government, corporate, and educational institutions around the world.

AFS allows almost any internet-connected computer to access the same storage locations (called volumes) provided that they pass the authentication and authorization access controls.

A key feature is that once a certain part of the global filesystem is mounted onto your local machine’s filesystem, it is for many purposes indistinguishable from ordinary local storage.
