We’re now within one year of Microsoft officially ending support for Windows XP. This operating system began it’s public life on October 25, 2001 and it seems like ages ago. IT Services stopped deploying new XP systems very soon after Windows 7 started to become available from major hardware vendors in November, 2009. CMU’s Computing Services group announced in March, 2013 that campus support for XP will end after December 31, 2013.
IT Services urges customers to make plans to upgrade as soon as possible. Please make use of the several options available for upgrading to supported Windows operating systems. The IT Services Userguide has more information here.
If IT Services customers have hardware or software that requires Windows XP, please contact us to discuss what options, if any, are available. As with any commercial OS that no longer has security patch support from the vendor, XP should never be exposed to public networks once it is deemed end-of-life.
